Signs You May Need a Dental Filling

Find out if a dental filling is what you need to keep your smile healthy.

Not sure whether one of your teeth could be improved by getting a dental filling? Has our Anderson, SC, dentist, Dr. Mark Hoyle, recentlydental fillings told you that you need to get a dental filling? If so, then you may have questions or want to know more about this common dental treatment and how it can benefit your smile.

So, how do you know if you need a dental filling?

This is a tough question to answer without examining your teeth first; however, if you suspect that you have a cavity then you need to seek treatment from our Anderson general dentist right away. A cavity will not go away on its own and will continue to spread further, if left untreated.

You may be dealing with a cavity if you are experiencing:

  • A toothache
  • Pain when chewing or biting
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • A dark spot or hole in a tooth

Also, if a current dental filling fell out, is loose or has become damaged, then you’ll need to come in right away to make sure we place a new one before bacteria infects the tooth again.

What is a dental filling?

Once our Anderson family dentist has removed the cavity, we will need to fill the tooth to restore its strength, function and appearance. If the cavity isn’t too extensive then we will opt for a dental filling.

A dental filling is a tooth-colored material that we will apply and shape over the hole left over by the drilled-out decay. Before the dental resin is applied, we will match the material to the shade of your tooth so that it blends in and isn’t noticeable. Next, the resin is applied in layers.

With each layer, we will mold and contour it to the tooth and then harden it with a blue curing light before applying the next layer. Once the final layer of the filling is hardened into place, we will polish the filling to make sure it shines just like natural tooth enamel.

Whether you just need to schedule your next routine dental exam or you have questions about dental fillings, don’t hesitate to call our Anderson, SC, dental office to schedule your next appointment or ask us questions about the dental services we offer. We are here to help.
